History of the Melvin Nursery
In 1977, my husband’s parents opened the Melvin Nursery in Boring, Oregon. Specializing in ornamental trees and plants, my husband and siblings helped tend to the plants that they raised from a very early age. 23 years later my now husband and I met, and while his parents had suspended the nursery business, the land was still there as evidence of years past. The first summer we met, I camped out in their yard to pursue a dream job working for the Forest Service. I envied the acreage they had, and with my love of plants and gardening, hoped that someday we would have a property of our own to start a substantial garden.
We moved to Bellingham in 2013 and immediately fell in love with our property. The only thing missing from our new home purchase was a garden. Unknown to us at the time, the sunny land we chose for the future site of the garden was composed of fill material from the previous property owner. It was both tough and rewarding removing rocks (and boulders) to groom our future garden site, but every time I look at our garden and see our children rummaging through the plants and bushes for a snack, I can’t help but smile. We have come a long way from where we started and we look forward to sharing our joy of gardening and its harvest with you.
In the Fall of 2019 I was gifted a sourdough starter. After months of research and a LOT of trial and error, I’m happy to say that we have had exceptional results. Once you try a loaf, you might not be able to stop.
